Communication Scholar | Forensics Educator | APIDA Community Advocate

Richard Hu is a communication scholar and forensics educator whose work centers on elevating the voices, histories, and rhetorical traditions of the Asian Pacific Islander Desi American (APIDA) community. A first-generation college graduate from Alhambra, California, Richard holds dual Bachelor of Arts degrees in Communication and Asian & Asian American Studies from California State University, Los Angeles, where he graduated summa cum laude, as well as a Master’s degree in Communication Studies from Cal State LA.

During his academic career, Richard distinguished himself as both a high-achieving scholar and an elite competitor on the Cal State LA Forensics Speech and Debate Team, serving on the team’s Executive Council and earning national-level recognition. His competitive record includes top placements in Impromptu Speaking, Extemporaneous Speaking, Communication Analysis, and After Dinner Speaking, including a national runner-up finish at the National Forensics Association National Tournament and multiple finals appearances at the American Forensics Association National Speech Tournament.

Richard’s teaching and coaching philosophy is grounded in the intersection of rhetoric, identity, and social justice. His work critically examines how communication practices shape power, representation, and belonging—particularly for historically marginalized communities. In addition to his competitive and academic achievements, Richard served as a commencement speaker for the College of Ethnic Studies, advocating for cultural visibility, emotional authenticity, and collective responsibility within higher education spaces.

Having transferred from East Los Angeles College, where he earned an associate degree in communication studies, Richard brings a strong equity-focused and access-oriented perspective to his work with students. Whether in the classroom, on the tournament circuit, or in community-based spaces, he is committed to fostering critical thinking, ethical advocacy, and empowered public voice.
