Early attempts at using a file-sharing approach to online communication education proved inefficient. In theory, waiting for video downloads and managing storage space don’t sound like insurmountable obstacles, but in practice, each recorded speech compounds the frustration that comes with using video as a medium for online communication education. This is especially true when one considers the myriad of free applications that exist to facilitate video sharing in today’s information age. Fortunately, modern advances in AI technology have resulted in applications that are tailor made for online communication instruction.  This lesson is going to go through the simple steps you need to share your video assignments for an online communication course.

Sharing Yoodli Recordings

We will be using video recordings throughout this course to submit assignments and evaluate peers. The easiest way to share videos, by far, is through Yoodli, an AI-powered speech coaching platform. Yoodli allows you to record your speeches, receive automated feedback on various aspects of your delivery, and easily share your recordings with your instructor and peers for evaluation and guidance.

To get started with Yoodli, you will receive an email invitation from ProtoCommunications to create your account. Please follow the instructions in the email to set up your account. If you do not receive the invitation email within a few days of enrolling in the course, please contact your instructor. Once your account is set up, familiarize yourself with the Yoodli platform and its features. As a student in this course, you will have access to unlimited Yoodli recordings for the duration of the semester, a $240 value provided by ProtoCommunications.

When setting up your Yoodli account, it is important to pay attention to the privacy settings for the videos you will upload. Yoodli provides three privacy options to ensure that your videos are only accessible to your intended audience:

  1. Anyone with the link can view: This setting allows anyone who has the link to your video to view it. While this may be useful for sharing your speeches with a wider audience, it is not recommended for course assignments, as it may compromise your privacy.
  2. Only my organization can view: This setting restricts access to your videos to people within your Yoodli group, which includes your classmates and instructor. This is the recommended setting for most course assignments, as it ensures that your videos are only accessible to those involved in the course.
  3. Only people invited can view: This setting means that only you can view your videos. This may be useful for personal practice sessions or drafts that you do not wish to share with others.

We strongly urge you to select the ‘Only my organization can view’ privacy setting for your course-related videos. This will maintain your privacy while still allowing your instructor and peers to provide feedback and engage in discussions about your speeches.

Once you have recorded your speech on Yoodli, you can easily share it with your instructor and peers by copying the link to your video. Yoodli’s platform ensures that your videos are accessible to those who need to view them while maintaining your privacy.

Using YouTube as a Backup

In the event that Yoodli is not working or you encounter technical difficulties, you can still submit your speeches using YouTube. To do this, record your speech using your preferred method (webcam, phone, etc.) and then upload the video to YouTube. When uploading, be sure to set the privacy setting to “Unlisted.” This means that your video will not be publicly searchable, but anyone with the link can view it.

To share your unlisted YouTube video, simply copy the link and submit it to the appropriate assignment or discussion forum in your course. Your instructor and peers will be able to access and view your speech by clicking on the provided link.

While Yoodli is the preferred platform for this course due to its AI-powered feedback and easy sharing capabilities, submitting unlisted YouTube videos is a viable alternative when necessary. Regardless of the platform used, the most important thing is that you are able to record and share your speeches with your instructor and classmates for evaluation and feedback.

Yoodli is an exciting new product that helps students develop disciplined speaking skills on their own time. While we are confident that there is, and will always be, a need for human evaluation of speeches, Yoodli is an excellent tool for practicing and refining your public speaking abilities.

By leveraging the power of Yoodli (or YouTube when necessary) and actively engaging in the practice and feedback process, you will have the opportunity to significantly enhance your public speaking skills throughout this course. Embrace this chance to practice, learn from the AI-powered feedback and your peers, and develop the confidence and competence to become an effective communicator in today’s digital age.
